The chairperson of the ANC is the biggest culprit, who has vested interests and he should be replaced with immediate effect with an capable as well as competent engineer/technocrat, who is knowledgeable with operational and technical experiences to implement alternatives unto the national grid to secure the electricity supply to our citizens.

Biomass is notably absent from the list of alternatives given – the baseload tri-gen energy this renewable feedstock can supply in both urban and rural areas is currently utilised in many countries across the world.

The many proposals we have tabled over the past 15 years for a wide range of clients – government, corporates, individuals – have inevitably hit the buffers due to regulatory obstacles and government inertia …….Prof Anton Eberhard spelled out the path forward in 1998 – 25 years ago!

Until the Eskom monopoly is dismantled – entirely – we will not progress the energy debate and benefit from the contribution that ALL IPP’s can make to the SA economy.

It is possible to use a small RYOBI 2.5 kVA generator which can be manually switched on with a suitable power switch, when ESKOM power is off. The generator runs on regular 93 petrol, and powers a microwave, 3-4 lights, a TV, a computer, and a fridge. Installation costs are only for the wiring and the power switch and can be done by a licensed electrician. He would also include a green lamp which indicates when ESKOM power is ON. This non-luxurious but eminently suitable and practical system has been running in my house for several years. Oh yes, and buy a 10-liter and a 5 liter jerry can for the petrol..
